Historical Village—”summer” season

Gasoline Alley Museum—year-round

This 127-acre park boasts “a historically accurate village with costumed interpreters.” As Canada’s biggest museum of living history, Heritage Park offers nearly 200 exhibits and nearly 60,000 artifacts. These include an old-fashioned bakery with candy store, an antique midway, and a real steam engine locomotive for transporting visitors around the park on a one mile track. The costumed staff help bring history to life.

The new Gasoline Alley Museum provides a look at the early history of automobiles and the powerful effect they have had on our society. The museum includes more than four dozen singular trucks and other vehicles.

If art and artifacts turn you on, then you will be glad to peruse their collection of nearly 30,000 pieces from historic, modern and contemporary periods. Three floors of the museum house enduring exhibits of native history and culture, European migration and the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. New exhibits open regularly. The museum also features a museum shop, library, archives plus a café.

In honor of winter Olympians, this museum’s two floors offer a variety of interactive displays and exhibits including a theater that presents Olympic footage. The Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum also includes a hands-on discovery room, documentaries on numerous Olympic athletes and more.

This proves to be Western Canada’s largest military museum. Originally opened by Queen Elizabeth II, herself, in 1990, it contains six galleries—five permanent and one temporary. These galleries clarify Canadian contributions to peacekeeping worldwide. Interactive displays, model re-enactments, life-size replicas, and videos bring to life the museum’s message. Outside, several vintage carriers and tanks decorate the museum grounds.

Listed by Rolling Stone magazine as number 14 in its list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” British guitarist, Jeff Beck, has played with some of the best. He, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page were the three noted guitarists who played with The Yardbirds.

His sounds have spanned many genres including heavy metal, blues-rock, jazz fusion and his own version of electronica. Besides having his own albums as a solo act, Beck has appeared on the albums of such noted artists as Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Cyndi Lauper, ZZ Top, Mick Jagger, Roger Waters, Kate Bush and others.

July 6–15, 2012—Centennial Celebration

Held every July, the world-famous Calgary Stampede celebrates its one hundredth year in 2012.

The official opening starts with a parade on the first Friday. With a different parade marshal each year from amongst actors, athletes, politicians and other celebrities, this event includes hundreds of rodeo entrants on horseback, more than one hundred and fifty floats, clowns, dozens of marching bands, Native American dancers, and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police decked out in their red uniforms. Nearly half a million people each year have attended past opening parades.

The Stampede’s main event, of course, is the rodeo, with its $100,000 prize to each major discipline’s winner. These disciplines include bull riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping, barrel racing, saddle bronc and bareback riding, plus novice events

But the Calgary Stampede is much more. The Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Races offers a different kind of heart pounding excitement. The agricultural exhibition displays numerous breeds of livestock, team penning competitions, stock dog trials and the World Championship Blacksmith Competition. Entertainment stages and concerts, plus the Stampede Market where everything from artwork to toys are on sale.

More than a million people attend the Calgary Stampede each year and the centennial celebration is likely to be even bigger.

Open Year-Round

During the 1988 Winter Olympics, this park was the location for bobsleigh, ski jumping, and luge. Winter months see the park used for snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing.

Summer months find the facilities used for all manner of warm-weather activities including mountain biking and summer festivals. In fact, there are 25 kilometers (16 miles) of bike trails.
